Overview

A small city in the American Northeast in the early 1970s is devastated by its steel mills shutting down and throwing many out of work, who are now struggling to survive. Barney Lomax is in his mid-fifties having been a crane driver at the mills. In the years since the mills closed, he's only been able to find short-term or part-time work. Recently, he has developed the fear that he together with his wife Sarah and daughter Diana will have to go on welfare and become government dependents. He loathes that happening. Sarah wants Barney to pray to God for help and peace of mind. Barney is only able to see that as God wanting him to go on welfare and being willing to betray all that he stands for, his belief in himself, his moral integrity, his sense of decency, his belief in self-reliance, and accomplishing things by his own efforts. To Barney, God would be asking him to deny that he's always been a hard worker and accept that his life adds up to nothing, that he's a nobody, just a good-for-nothin' "nigger." Barney finds himself in a perpetual rage living in a rich country, and not being able to find work. He feels America has betrayed and deserted him, and he doesn't understand why. Didn't he live the American Dream? Hasn't he always tried to live up to the country's ideals, and to provide for his family? Didn't he move steel for twenty-five years to help America grow? But his battle with God, America, and trying to avoid becoming a nigger, exposes another side of him: his multiple racist beliefs against Blacks, Jews, and women of all races that have corroded his character and morality, making him prone to self-denial, delusional thinking, intolerance, and violence. He is lost and despondent in a turbulent mental and social world he has helped to create for himself, but fails to see how he has done so, or how to get out of it. Barney is incapable of genuine self-knowledge, or engaging in a heroic act of self-transcendence to avoid the fateful destiny he is unwittingly racing towards.
